I am... I can... I will...

My name is Bianca Plunkett Gooley and I am a 38 year old primary school teacher by trade, a wife and mother to two young children, and a writer by night.

Just over seven years ago, whilst being on maternity leave, I was diagnosed with an extreme and rare form of breast cancer: Triple Negative. I have always wished to write about the highs and lows of my journey through the disease, especially from a young mother’s perspective. I also wished to write my life story (pre and post cancer) for my children to read had I not survived.

When I was first diagnosed there were not any books written from the perspective of a young person with a young family suffering from TNBC. I believe my story could have the ability to help and inspire fellow cancer sufferers and show them the positives as well as the ‘not so good’ times they may face. I was able to write about the whole journey in quite a frank, open and often humorous way. In the last few months, I have known three young mothers be diagnosed with TNBC and I have chosen to self publish as I feel my book cannot get out there quick enough to help these people, their families, as well as others.

My book is a collection of a few different styles of writing. It is based on my journal kept from 2009, just prior to being diagnosed with breast cancer. It chronologically describes the highs and lows of having a toddler, a newborn and being diagnosed and treated for TNBC.  It is a very raw account of my journey through surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, rehabilitation up until my ‘finally being three years cancer free’ milestone.

My book also features paragraphs of philosophical prose and poetry, as well as letters to my loved ones. These are intermittingly placed throughout the book and sometimes recount humorous highlights and/or happy memories of my life thus far. Others are letters of thanks and gratefulness, and of my dreams and aspirations of a cancer free life.

There are many references to the community (hospitals, care centres, therapeutic outlets) and I have written about things I felt were beneficial to my journey, all the time asking fellow cancer sufferers to be realistic and mindful to their own needs as each journey is an individual one.

I hope you or someone you know may benefit from reading my book.

Much love

Bianca xo
